Tips to Consolidate Your Desk Before You Move

Advice from our Project Team: Amanda Radusovsky, Caroline Tunis, and James Carello

To bring, or not to bring- that is the question! Our Project Management Team understands the stress that comes with relocating your office. Since packing what you’ll need in your new space may not be at the top of your priority list, our Certified Project Team put together some tips to help you efficiently pack up your work space. Most relocations to new office spaces offer reduced individual storage space, so planning is imperative.

1. Out with the old!

“It’s a great time for spring cleaning. Take only what you absolutely need to the new space,” says James Carello, one of our Project Managers. Discard outdated files, paper documents, as well as food and beverages . Take personal items, including plants home. Check your company’s policy to see if supplies, books or other items can be donated. Amanda Radusovsky, another of our Project Managers, shares a helpful tip for deciding when to discard certain items, “If you haven’t used items for the last year, it may be time to toss them or bring it home. You don’t want to clutter your new space with useless items or transport them only to be discarded them after the move.”

2. Pack cartons according to the instructions you’re given.

This is where cleaning before your move comes into play! Fully pack each carton to avoid potential damage to items inside. Make sure each box is closed flat and securely, to ensure that they can be moved readily when stacked. Take home personal items, or wrap and pack delicate items with protective materials before packing them.  Our Teamster movers are well trained professionals. They relocate everything, including cartons, as safely and carefully as possible. Make sure to place your personalized move labels correctly on the end of the cartons to make sure that boxes are delivered to the correct location. Don’t put labels on the top of cartons as they will be obscured when they are stacked.

3. Label and pack cartons to help with unpacking.

If you pack multiple cartons, mark them numerically “Box 1 of 3”, “Box 2 of 3” etc. according to importance and to keep track of how many cartons you packed. For example, Box 1 of 3 would contain your most recent project or most critical documents. When you arrive at your new location, you will be able to go back to work quickly and efficiently, rather than searching through multiple boxes for the documents you need.

4. Take your laptop home.

Generally, the weekend of your relocation includes the disconnect and reconnect of desktop technology. To keep you in business throughout the move, take your laptop and charger home. Bring it back when you go to your new site.  Additionally, you can stay on top of your workload while Certified does the heavy lifting!

5. Create a personal packing schedule

Plan and organize what you will need immediately at your new location as well as what you should take home. Once you have determined what you will be relocating, pack over several days so you don’t get overwhelmed on your last day in your old site. Planning and then packing ensures everything you need arrives at your new work space. And the bonus is: this methodology creates a calmer packing experience and an easier first day at your new location.
